Sallie Smith, born in Bulloch County, Georgia, attended Tyson Grove School before going on to college at South Georgia Teachers College (soon re-named Georgia Teachers College). After obtaining her degree in Library Science at Florida State University, she became a librarian in Austell, Georgia. IN 1966, she returned to Statesboro and became an instructor-librarian at Georgia Southern College and a school librarian at Mattie Lively Elementary School.
